The accounting department on a film or TV production does pretty much what all accountants do. They keep track of the cash flow and spending. They monitor the cost of production and keep a close eye on the budget. They’re also in charge of making sure everyone gets paid on time.

But there are a few wrinkles when it comes to film and TV accounting. Production accountants work with producers before filming begins. Their goal is to come up with a budget and estimates of the final cost of production.

Productions in Alberta can take advantage of the Film and Television Tax Credit and other government funding. To apply for these programs, accountants must prepare detailed cost information and financial statements.

On larger productions, the production accountant gets help from an assistant production accountant.
