The director of photography leads both the camera and lighting departments. They work closely with the director to create the look and feel of the movie. When shooting begins, they coordinate the camera crew and help the director set up each scene so it can be shot properly.

On a large production, the camera crew is large, so keeping it running smoothly is no small task. In addition to the camera operator and assistant, the crew might include drone operators, steadicam operators and underwater camerawork.
