Depending on the script, the locations team searches out churches, greasy spoons, fancy homes, dive bars or warehouses. The possibilities are endless.
Location managers are in charge of the department. They read the script and work with the director and the production designer to determine the needed locations. Then the search begins. Location scouts aid location managers. Together, they search online databases of available locations. On large productions, local scouts help with the search.
Once suitable locations are found, the locations department negotiates with owners. They also manage the location during the shoot. When shooting wraps, the department cleans up the location and returns it to the owners in its original condition.
The location department is represented by DGC.
