The props discipline combines creativity and rigorous organization. Creativity comes in when a prop needs to be built or invented. Think of films set in space and all the weapons that need to be created. Keeping track of the sheer number of props and making sure they are ready when needed explains the need for rigor.
The department is led by the props master, who works with the art director, production designer and set decorators to draw up a props list. Prop buyers rent or purchase items that don’t need to be built. Prop builders tackle the Items that need to be created.
Everything has to fit the onscreen world. Period dramas can’t have modern items. Futuristic thrillers need high-tech gadgets.
The props department is represented by IATSE.
