They create elements of the set that would be too expensive or cumbersome to include otherwise. They sculpt things like ancient Greek statues that would be impossible to use in filming. In the case of a boulder or a stone block, Styrofoam is a lot easier to move and can be used in multiple scenes.

Sculptors work with production designers and set designers to understand what is needed. On larger productions, the department includes a sculpting coordinator, a lead sculptor, sculptors and assistant sculptors. There may also be a specialty sculptor skilled in arcane arts like chainsaw carving, mold-making or metal sculpture.
